Recon-Zeal Transcend goggles now shipping, GPS and head-mounted display included

Don't you just love it when a plan comes together? If you'll recall, we heard that Recon Instruments was fixing to up-end the winter sports goggle market in February of this year, with an optimistic-at-the-time ship date of October 2010. Lo and behold, the outfit has managed to nail its estimate, and the planet's first GPS-enabled goggles are now available to highfalutin' skiers and snowboarders. At least initially, the company will be rolling out a limited set, with two models to choose from: the $499 Transcend SPPX is fitted with an SPPX polarized and photochromic lens, while the $399 Transcend SPX features an SPX polarized lens. Aside from the fact that these probably cost less than those ho hum Oakleys in the ski shop, they're equipped with a Zeal Optics' frame design with a micro LCD display, which appears to hang approximately six feet in front of the user. That head-mounted display provides real-time feedback to the wearer, including speed, latitude / longitude, altitude, vertical distance traveled, total distance traveled, a chrono / stopwatch mode, a run-counter, temperature and time. Yeah, wow. You can bet we'll be trying to snag a set for review when we do our best impression of "hitting the slopes" post-CES.

Developers drop prices on super popular App Store apps

If you thought yesterday's App Store sales were nice, you haven't seen anything yet. For some reason, a whole bunch of terrific apps are dropping their prices this weekend, and Touch Arcade has put together a nice roundup. TUAW Daily App choices Osmos, Archetype, Civilization Revolution, Secret of Monkey Island (and its sequel) and Hybrid 2 are all on sale for as cheap as 99 cents, as is Telltale's Puzzle Agent, Popcap's Bookworm and Peggle, and a host of other high-profile titles. Pretty crazy -- some of the App Store's most popular titles, including EA's Need for Speed series and Activision's Call of Duty Zombies games, are seeing the biggest drops in their lifetimes.

My best guess for the big drops is that the financial year 2010 ends today, and these companies are trying to pad out their mobile app sale numbers before (or while) the quarter turns over. But whatever the reason, we consumers benefit -- if you've been waiting to pick some of these games up, now's your chance. And I think we'll be seeing a lot more of this. Companies, especially companies that have been premiering their apps as high as $9.99, are learning that dropping the price like this moves copies quickly, so as we move into the frenzied holiday season for gaming, we'll probably see more than a few big sales come down the pike. Stay tuned.

Ballmer?s bonus slashed due to Kin failure

The failure of the Microsoft Kin phone was swift and epic. I haven?t seen a phone fail that fast before. You can bet the failure was felt around Microsoft and CEO Steve Ballmer may have felt the failure in his heart, but it hit is wallet too according to Reuters.

ballmer sg

Ballmer saw his nice, fat bonus slashed in the wake of the failure of the Kin and the Microsoft tablet efforts. The bonus was cut despite the fact that Microsoft had its biggest year ever. Reuters report that the bonus Ballmer received was $670,000, equal to his salary.

That is a lot of green for sure, but the bonus could have been twice that amount had the Kin and the tablet efforts paid off. Reuters reports that the official factors for the bonus cut were according to documents, “unsuccessful launch of the Kin phone, loss of market share in the company’s mobile phone business, and the need for the company to pursue innovations to take advantage of new form factors.”

This Android android runs Android, eats humans

Don't get enough Android in your life between your daytime Droid pal and that raging evening Engadget Podcast addiction? Well, try this on for size, fanboy: two Japanese companies, RT Corporation and Brilliant Service, have teamed up to make an Android logo-shaped Android that runs Android and that can be controlled by an Android device over WiFi. Happy now? All Google loyalist needling aside, this little bot is actually pretty wild, with an Armadillo 500FX board inside controlling the sizable green creature. In fact, Android and robotics has been a bit of a love fest over the past year or so, and we're excited to see where they're headed -- hopefully recursive mascots isn't the evolutionary endpoint here. Check out some video of the bot after the break.

How to show more sites on your Internet Explorer new tab page

Internet Explorer 9's new tab page (or about:Tabs) is a handy way to access your most frequently accessed sites. But suppose you'd like to display more than 10 sites -- there's no way to change the number in IE9's options screen! Fortunately, a quick registry edit is all that's required.

Thanks to Microsoft's Eric Law, you don't even need to get your hands dirty in regedit. On his recent blog post, there are four .REG files provided for download which allow you to display 15 (3 rows), 20 (4 rows), or 25 (5 rows) of sites. The default IE9 default setting is also there should you decide 10 sites was enough after all.

If you're the DIY type and registry editing is right up your alley, head to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TabbedBrowsing\NewTabPage and adjust the NumRows key to your liking. If you don't see NumRows listed, just add a new DWORD value and enter 2-5.

Haven't taken IE9 for a spin yet? It's well worth a download.
