Chomium update shows additional Chrome Web app tweaks

The launch of Google Chrome OS has been delayed and we still haven't gotten to browse the aisles of the Chrome Web Store... but there's still plenty of app-related work going on at Google. In recent Chromium snapshots, for example, a couple of subtle UI tweaks show that we're inching ever closer to being able to install Web apps in Google Chrome.

Chromium's wrench menu now displays how many background Web apps are currently running in your browser (or browser-OS, if you're using Chrome OS). Clicking view background apps will bring the Chrome task manager into view, where the CPU, memory, and network utilized by your Background Apps and Extensions is displayed.

Chrome Web apps, of course, will be very similar to the extensions you can currently install from the Gallery. Similar enough, in fact, that many popular extensions will require only a minor tweak to their manifest files to "evolve" into apps. They'll have access to additional APIs and have different permission options, however, which will allow Chrome Web apps to go beyond current extension functionality.

Thanksgiving treat: tons of iPhone, iPad, iPod touch games on sale

Turkey Steve Jobs and iPhone. Apologies.
The kind and fantabulously generous Sir Awesome of Touch Arcade has compiled a huge list of games that have had their prices slashed this holiday season. If you're after more of a 'curated' list, with actual links to iTunes, they have a blog post up with their list of must-have discounted games.

Most games on the list seem to have undergone massive, more-than-50% discounts. Need for Speed Shift is down at 99 cents, as is NFL 2011. If I had an iOS device, I'd be able to pick out all of the cool games for you -- but I don't. So there.

Finally, take note that some games aren't yet on sale, but will go on sale sometime between now and 'Cyber Monday.' No big rush, though; it looks like everything is on sale until at least November 28!

Better Pop Up Blocker for Chrome blocks pop-ups -- better

betterpopupblocker

Who doesn't love pop-ups? Really, I mean, it has to be the world's most effective and well-respected mode of advertising. You're browsing along, reading something on the Web, and suddenly your screen explodes with color and NSFW video clips. Seriously, how can you not enjoy that?

If you're one of the odd few who aren't enthusiastic about pop-ups, you might appreciate Better Pop Up Blocker. While Chrome already features some pop-up blocking measures, they're not very serious. Even when you add the popular AdBlock extension, Chrome's blocking abilities still leave something to be desired. This point is made quite convincingly by the Better Pop Up Blocker homepage. If you're using Chrome, just click the image that says Click me, I'm an image, and see what I mean.

By default, Chrome allowed three different huge pop-up windows to appear. After installing Better Pop Up Blocker, no pop-up appeared when clicking the image. I was still able to see what pop-ups were blocked using the extension's menu and open them if I did want to access them. The browser action icon will every time it blocks a pop-up, just to let you know it's working.

All in all, it's a welcome addition to my Chrome installation - and one that will remain installed on my system.

A week with AOL's new Project Phoenix mail

AOL Project Phoenix Email
As a someone who's been using Gmail since the invites actually meant something, I've become quite comfortable with my inbox. While it's not the most widely-used webmail app around, Gmail has set the bar for geeky features pretty high -- and those features are what keep me coming back. So how does AOL's newly revamped mail app (codenamed Project Phoenix) stack up? I was pleasantly surprised.

Yes, AOL is Download Squad's parent company -- but that doesn't mean I'm going to automatically love every app they develop. Phoenix, however, is really good. It's got a few features that I wish Gmail offered -- like a tabbed interface, quick compose (more on this later), a look reminiscent of native desktop apps, and integrated social network updating via Lifestream. It's also dead simple to connect accounts from other services such as Gmail and Windows Live.

Copy files to a Windows Phone 7 device in Windows Explorer

Don't get me wrong -- I really enjoy using Zune to listen to music on my desktop computer. When all I want to do is quickly drop a couple of songs or video clips onto my Windows Phone 7 device, however, it's a bit overkill. While my humble little Palm Pre has a USB mass storage mode which lets me copy files onto it like it was any other external hard drive, WP7 devices aren't quite as accessible.

Fortunately, there's an easy remedy -- and it only requires spending a minute in your registry. Make sure you've got the Zune desktop app installed before beginning. Now, on with the hacking!

Virgin officially announces Project magazine for iPad (and iPhone soon)

We're here at Virgin's press event for Project magazine, which Sir Richard Branson just called the "first all-digital magazine." It's launching on iPad first, then on the iPhone, but we also snuck a peek at the app last night and noticed a line about Android tablet support coming soon. Branson says the content will change constantly -- there'll even be comments, and sharing features are said to be "coming soon." Mapping features will be introduced in the iPhone version, which the Project editor-in-chief describes only as "all the coolest places in the world mapped by our users." Pricing for the iPad version is set at $2.99 per month, with the app updating throughout the period with new content and features. When asked about Rupert Murdoch's The Daily, Branson responded that "this is not a battle, not a war, but the future of publishing," while his chief editor had this to say: "We're not similar ... they're a daily newspaper, we're a monthly style magazine ... we wish them nothing but luck."
