Apple TVs are on the way from Shenzhen

Wow.

No sooner had we published the post about Apple TVs being queued for shipping than our TUAW mailboxes were filled with a steady stream of shipping notices.

The new Apple TVs are now being shipped from Shenzhen, China to a variety of destinations, and most people are seeing either Thursday, September 30 or Friday, October 1 as the delivery date.

I'm as giddy as a schoolgirl about the shipment - a middle-aged, slightly overweight schoolgirl with a beard, but you get the idea.

Thanks to the many tipsters who let us know about the packages that shipped while we were sleeping.

Second status indicator on the HTC Evo 4G? [From the forums]

evo-4g

Having come from a BlackBerry device where I was able to customize the LED indicator color for each type of message, coming to an Android device that only had the standard red for all of the messages was a bit of a change. While browsing our forums I noticed I was not the only one to dream of an application for this type of functionality, and while some third party developers have incorporated this, one post stood out above the rest. It appears as though the HTC Evo 4G has a second LED indicator that can be used with other colors besides the standard red, therefore giving users the option to set that in addition to the standard red indicator.  If you own an HTC Evo 4G you will want to check this thread out, and let us know what you think of it!

Are you using Apple's Ping?

Ping is Apple's first earnest foray into the social network game. Introduced with iTunes 10, Ping lets users see the music their friends are buying from the iTunes Store, leave comments and point out what they like.

There are also several musicians participating. The more active among them post photos and videos, stories and so on. It's a young network with lots of potential, but for now some folks are less than impressed. A recent update to iTunes put Ping in your music library (it used to be limited to the iTunes Store) and added a big 'ol sidebar.

Our question to you is: Are you using it? I'll admit that my interest has waned, and that's because nearly all of the updates I see are of the "[Person X] is now following [Person Y]" variety, which isn't very interesting. Perhaps if the artists I followed were a bit more active.

Am I the only one? Complete our short poll below and let us know if you're using Ping. We'll post the results at a later time.

How to Make Pickles

Summary:

Here's how to make my grandma's refrigerator pickle recipe. These were always a favorite of mine growing up and a great way to preserve garden produce.

'''Ingredients:'''
* 4 medium cucumbers
* 4 onions
* Salt
* 2 cups sugar
* 1 cup vinegar
* 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

'''step 1: Slice Cucumber and Onions'''
Take four medium cucumbers and slice them. Also slice thinly four onions.

'''step 2: Layering'''
In a large bowl or jar, lay down a layer of cucumbers and then a layer of onions on top of that. Lightly salt the layer and then add another layer of cucumbers, onions, and sprinkling of salt. Continue layering until vegetables are used up.

'''step 3: Refrigerate Overnight'''
Seal the pickle container and refrigerate over night, letting the cukes release their moisture.

'''step 4: Make Picking Liquid'''
Next mix together two cups of sugar, one cup of white vinegar, and 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley in a saucepan.

Cook on stovetop until sugar dissolves.

'''step 5: Pickle the Cucumbers'''
Remove the cucumbers from the refrigerator and drain off excess liquid.

Then pour hot sugar syrup over top of the cukes and return to the refrigerator.

The pickles will be ready to eat the following day. They will store in the refrigerator for several weeks.

Enjoy!

Ping finally gets proper iTunes integration

Filed under: ,

Call me crazy, but if you're going to integrate a new social network into your desktop media library app, it might be a good idea for users to be able to share the items in their library from the get-go. That wasn't the case with Ping, however.

When it launched, songs could only be shared from the iTunes Store -- and who wants to dig around in the Store to find a song which is already in their local library just to share it on Ping? Not me, that's for sure.

With the latest update to iTunes, however, Ping is actually integrated with iTunes. As you play songs or search through your library, you can now click and post to Ping. It's much simpler, more logical, and the way Ping should have worked in iTunes from the get-go. There's also a sidebar which displays relevant information from across Ping about the artist you've selected.

I'm still not going to use Ping, but I'm glad to see Apple moved quickly to fix what was a fairly silly gap in functionality.
